Paper Receipts Are Dying — Here’s What to Do Instead

July 22, 2025

Let’s be honest:
Nobody wants a shoebox full of crumpled receipts in 2025.
But you still need proof of your expenses — and the CRA doesn’t care if your dog ate it.

📂 The CRA Rule on Records
Canada Revenue Agency doesn’t require paper. They require evidence.
That means a digital photo, scan, or PDF of the original is totally fine — as long as it’s clear, complete, and stored safely.

🧾 What Counts as “Proof” of an Expense?

  • Vendor name
  • Date
  • Amount paid
  • What it was for

A blurry photo of a bank charge that says “Walmart” isn’t good enough.
You need the actual receipt.

📱 How to Go Paperless (Without Losing Your Mind)

1️⃣ Snap a photo right after you buy something.
Make it a habit — before you even leave the parking lot.

2️⃣ Use a cloud folder or receipt app.
Google Drive, Dropbox, Dext, Hubdoc… whatever works. Just keep it organized by year.

3️⃣ Back it up.
If you lose access to your phone or email, CRA won’t take that as an excuse.

🎯 Bonus Tip: Label your uploads as you go.

🚫 What Not to Do

  • Throw out receipts before you’ve backed them up
  • Assume your bank statement is good enough
  • Wait till tax time to figure it all out
