Why Your Business Expenses Might Be Legal — But Still Screwing You Over

July 12, 2025

Everyone talks about claiming expenses. But no one talks about how bad expenses — or the wrong kinds — quietly kill your cash flow while you’re feeling smart for “writing it off.”

Yes, it’s legal. But is it good for your business? That’s the real test. Let’s get real:

⚡️ The Expense Trap No One Warns You About

We see it all the time:
👉 The solo operator who “writes off” coffee shop runs 5 days a week — but wonders why their profits stink.
👉 The contractor who buys every tool “just because it’s deductible” — but racks up credit card debt that eats all the tax savings.
👉 The business owner who maxes out on fancy dinners, extra subscriptions, or “brand upgrades” — but can’t pay themselves properly.

It’s all technically deductible. But you’re still paying for it first. The CRA just lets you pay a bit less tax on what’s left.

💡 Here’s the real truth:

💰 A $100 expense saves you maybe $10–$40 in tax — but still costs you $60–$90 in real money.

If you wouldn’t spend the money without the deduction, it’s not free money. It’s just smaller profit.

Smarter Expenses > More Expenses

Great businesses don’t just max deductions — they spend money that makes money.
Before you swipe the card, ask:
1️⃣ Does this expense reduce stress or waste in my business?
2️⃣ Does it directly help me earn more?
3️⃣ Is it the best version of this expense — or am I just justifying it because “I can write it off”?

The Expenses That Actually Pay You Back

Want an expense that always pays for itself? Good bookkeeping.
Clean books stop you from over-claiming garbage and missing the good stuff.
And they show you exactly which costs are dead weight vs. money-makers.
